Start gently
Dust and loose dirt should be removed before polishing. A soft cloth and mild cleaning method are safer starting points than aggressive abrasives.
Know the metal and finish
Bare brass, lacquered brass, stainless steel and coated aluminium should not automatically be treated the same way. If you are unsure, identify the material before applying a cleaner.
Avoid damaging the engraving
Harsh abrasives can alter surface finish, infill or surrounding coatings. Test any unfamiliar product in an inconspicuous area first.
Ask before restoring valuable plaques
For commemorative, historic or high-value pieces, professional advice is preferable to experimenting with aggressive polishing or chemical cleaners.
