Embossing
Embossing creates a raised design. Tooling forms the material so lettering, a logo or pattern stands proud of the surrounding surface.
Debossing
Debossing presses the design into the surface, creating a recessed mark. On leather goods and presentation products this can create a restrained, premium appearance.
Which is better?
Neither is universally better. Material thickness, construction, finish, artwork and how the item will be used all influence the choice.
Tooling and repeat work
Purpose-made dies allow the same design to be reproduced across multiple items, which is why embossed and debossed branding works well for corporate and presentation runs.
