How Does Laser Engraving Work?

From artwork to machine

The process begins with suitable artwork or lettering. The design is prepared digitally so its size, position and linework can be controlled before the item is placed in the machine.

The laser creates the mark

Depending on the material and the required result, the beam can remove surface material, change its appearance or create contrast. Power, speed, focus and repeated passes all affect the result.

Raster and vector work

Raster engraving builds an image line by line and is useful for filled areas and photographic-style work. Vector work follows defined lines and paths, making it useful for outlines, fine lettering and certain forms of marking.

Why testing matters

Two materials that look similar can react differently. For important or unusual items, suitability and settings should be assessed before committing to the final work.
